SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME (SHP) IN MIZORAM

I. Background :
The National School Health Programme was launched in 1977 as a Centrally Sponsored Schemme. In Mizoram it was started in 1978 in Selected PHC till 1991. After the Centrally Sponsored Scheme was ended in 1991, from 1993 the programme was taken up by the State, and the programme was extended to all PHC, CHC where Medical Officer (MO) were posted and also in the Urban area in all the Capital of the Districts in the State. The programme thrust is based on general health of the school going children and to take remedial measures and follow up. The programme specifically covers the primary School Children run by the Government only and the beneficiaries are the students of Nursery to class IV. The funds are from the State Plan and Non-Plan funds, which are very minimal to cater to the proper functioning of the School Health Programme.
Presently, it is proposed that the beneficiaries would be school students of classes I to XII, to be funded under the NRHM for better achievement in the SHP as carried out in most of other states of the Country. Project has been submitted for approval in the NRHM PIP (Programme Implementation Plan) for 2011-2012.

II.Objective of the programme :

Promotion of positive physical and mental Health of the school children
Prevention of diseases
Early diagnosis/treatment/follow up/referral
Awakening of health consciousness
Provision of healthful environment

School Health Programme under Ayushman Bharat was implemented in the Districts of Champhai, Mamit & Siaha during FY 2020-21.

ACHIEVEMENTS UNDER SCHOOL HEALTH (WIFS)

Total No. of schools covered : 1653

Total No. of Anganwadi covered : 2244

Out of school girls (MS - HSS) : 1,067

Target adolescent population : 1,00,776

IFA coverage in FY 2020-21 : 1.86%

**Due to closure of School and Anganwadi Centers due to Covid19, State reports were highlighted as NIL from April to October 2020. However, to ensure regular administration of IFA Supplements to target beneficiaries regardless of closure of Schools & Anganwadi Centres, IFA is made available in different public health facilities such as DHs, PHCs, CHCs & Sub-centres for easy access by beneficiaries**

** 1.86% IFA Coverage was reports received from Schools & Anganwadi Centres for the months of November 2020 to March 2021**

Adolescent Friendly Health Services (AFHS):

AFHS is one of the three components of Rashtriya Kishore Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) and is basically an expansion of Adolescent Reproductive & Sexual Health (ARSH) previously carried out under NHM. It is implemented with the aim of improving the health and well-being of adolescents aged 10-19 years so that they are able to realize their full potential by making informed and responsible decisions related to their health and well-being.

AFHS programme is currently implemented in 5 RKSK districts. i.e. Champhai, Mamit, Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Siaha.

Presently, there are 6 dedicated Adolescent Health Counsellorsproviding services in Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics(AFHCs). Rest of the AFHCs are manned by existing manpower of the DH/SDH/ CHC & PHC where clinics are located.

Community Process (Peer Educator):

Peer Educator aims to ensure that adolescents or young people between the ages of 10-19 years benefit from regular and sustained peer education covering nutrition, sexual and well-being of adolescents from 5 selected districts v.i.z., Champhai, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit and Siaha under RKSK programme.
